 The American film industry created the rating system used today for movies in 1968 as a way to inform parents about the contnet of movies.

미국 영화 산업은 1968년에, 부모에게 영화 내용에 대해 알려주기 위한 수단으로 현재 영화에 쓰이는 등급 체계를 만들어냈다.

the five ratings, G,PG,PG-13,R,andNC-17,can appear quite mysterious.

G, PG, PG-13, R과 NC-17의 다섯 등급은 매우 미스터리하게 보일 수 있다.

What does it all mean?

그것들은 무엇을 의미하는가?

the "G" rating stands for "General audience" and means that this movie is OK for young children.

"G" 등급은 "전체 관람가"이고, 이 영화는 어린 아이들이 봐도 된다는 뜻이다.

There is no bad language or Violence in the flim.

이 영화에는 나쁜 말이나 폭력 장면이 없다.

Parents can feel safe in watching these types of movies with any child or in allowing children to watch these movies alone.

부모님들은 이런 유형의 영화를 아이와 함께 보거나 아이 혼자 보도록 허용해도 안전하다고 느낄 수 있다.

The "PG" rating means "Parental Guidance is syggested" for  children.

PG는 어린이들이 부모들과 함께 관람가능한 영화다.

Movies with this rating have some bad language or violent scenes that may not be good for young children to watch.

이런 영화들은 어린이들에게 썩 좋은 영향을 끼치지 않는 몇몇의 나쁜언어 혹은 폭력물을 포함하고 있다.

There might even be some suggested sexual content in the movie, but no actual sex scenes are shown. 

 또 이런영화들은 성적인 장면이 포함되고 있으나 실제 성행위는 보여지지 않는다.

PG movies are generally acceptable for children in middle and high school to see.

PG 영화들은 대체적으로 중고등학생들이 볼만한 등급이다.

Becaues some PG movies included stronger bad language or more violence than an ordinary PG movie, the PG-13 rating was created in the 1980s.

왜냐하면 몇몇 PG 영화들은 자극적이고 나쁜언어 혹은 거친 폭력물이 일반적인 PG 영화보다 많이 포함되기 때문인데, 이때문에 PG-13 등급이 1980년 만들어졌다.

The "PG-13"meens "Parents Strongly Cautioned." 
PG-13의 부모들이 강하게 주의하다는 의미이다.

These movies contain material that should only be seen by children 13 years old or older.

이 영화들은 13세이상의 아이들에게만 관람이 허용되는 내용을 담고 있다.
Children who are under 13 can watch these movies only if their parents are in the theater with them.

13세가 안된 어린이들은 부모를 동반해야만 극장에서 영화를 관람할 수 있다.
Movies that are " Restricted " to adult audiences are rated " R " and contain scenes with nudity and sex.

성인 관람객에게 "제한된" 영화들은 "R"등급을 받으며 노출이나 정사장면을 포함하고 있다.

The language in these movies contains profanity, and the violence shown can be very graphic, usually filmed with blood and other disturbing special effects.

이 영화의 언어는 세속적인 표현을 담고 있으며 피나 다른 특정한 효과들을 교란시키는 폭력적인 장면이 생생하게 그려질 수 있다.

Kids must be 17 years old to watch an R-rated movie alone.

아이들은 R 등급의 영화를 혼자서 보려면 17세가 되어야 한다.
lf they are younger than 17, one of their parents must be in the theater with them.

만약 17세 이하라면 극장에 부모를 동반하여야 한다.
Much like the change that occurred with the PG rating, movies continued to add more sexual content and violence until it became difficult to draw the line between R-rated movies and X-rated ones.

PG등급에 변화가 생긴 것과 같이 영화들은 R등급과 X등급사이에 선을 긋기가 어려울 정도로 더 많은 성적 내용과 폭력적 내용을 더해가고 있다.
 
Movies produced for general release want to avoid an X rating because newspapers will not advertise these types of movies, and it is therefore difficult to market these types of movies to the general public.

일반적인 상영을 위해 만들어진 영화는 X등급을 받길 원하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 신문들이 이 영화광고를 해주지 않을 것이고 그러면 일반사람들에 이 영화를 알리기가 힘들어지기 때문이다.

Therefore, in the early 1990s, a new rating, NC-17, was created to warn people that certain movies were either very sexually explicit, or they contained extremely graphic violence.

그 때문에 1990년대 초반에 NC-17이라는 새 등급이 생겨났는데 이는 어떤 영화들은 숨김없는 매우 성적인 표현이나 극히 생생한 폭력장면을 포함하고 있다고 사람들에게 경고하기 위함이다.

No one under the age of 17 can see a movie rated NC-17 even if their parents are with them.

17세 미만이라면 부모를 동반하더라도 이 영화를 볼 수 없다.


With all the ratings discussed above, it should be kept in mind that these are only suggested guidelines for parents to follow.

 위에 논의된 평가들은 단지 부모들이 따라야 할 지침을 제안하는 것임에 유의하십시오.

Children who are eleven or twelve years old will rarely be asked to show proof of their age if they want to buy a ticket to a PG-13 movie.  

13세 이하 주의지도 필요영화(PG-13: Parental Guidance Suggested for Children under 13) 등급의 영화표를 구매하고자 할 때 11~12세의 아이들은 누군가가 나이를 확인하는 경험을 거의 하지 않을 것입니다. 

It is assumed that the child's parents are responsible for checking to see which movies their child is watching  아이들이 어떤 영화를 보는지에 대해 확인하는 것은 그 부모님들에게 책임이 있는 것이 당연한 일로 여겨집니다.

There has, however, been a lot of debate around the issue of how violence in movies can affect the behavior of Children.

 그러나 영화에서의 폭력성이 아이들의 행동에 얼마나 영향을 미치는지에 대해서는

수 많은 논쟁이 있어 왔습니다.

 Some educators and researchers believe that watching sex and violence is damaging to children.

 몇몇 교육자들과 연구원들은 성적이고 폭력적인 장면들이 아이들에게 충격이 될수있다고 믿었다.

 And some studies have shown that when children see violence, they may feel it's nomal to violent.

 그리고 몇몇 연구결과들은 보여주었는데 그것은 폭력적인장면을 보면서 폭력이 자연스러워졌다는 것이다.

These researchers believe that laws must be created to enforce the rating system so that children will have a harder time watching movies that are not suitable for thme when the children's parents are not with them at the theater.

 이러한 연구자들은 법적으로 아이들이 부모와 함께 잇지 않은 시간에 적절치 않은 영화를 보기 힘들게 하기 위해 rating system을 만들어 강력하게 추진해야 한다.
