 Silicon Valley is in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California in the United Staes.
실리콘 벨리는 미합중국 내의 캘리포니아 북쪽 샌프란시스코만 지역의 남쪽에 위치하고 있다.
the term originally referrde to the region's large number of Silicon Chip innovators and manufacturers,
but eventually came to refer to all the high tech businesses in the area, and as a metonym for the high-tech sector generally.
원래뜻은 그 지역의 수많은 실리콘 칩 도입자들과 생산자들을 통칭하였지만 결국엔 지역내의 모든 신 기술 사업을 통칭하게 되었으며 그리고 통상적으로 고차원기술부문의 환유어로 되었다.
 Silicon Valley encompasses the northern part of Santa Clara Valley and adjacent communities in the southern part of the San Franscisco Peninsula and East Bay.

The term Silicon Valley was coined by journalist Don Hoefler in 1971. 
Silicon Valley라는 명칭은 1971년 Don Hoefler라는 저널리스트(기자?)에 의해서 만들어진 이름이다.
He used it as the title of a series of articles "Silicon Valley USA" in a weekly trade newspaper Electronic News which started with the January 11, 1971 issue.
그는 주간으로 발간되는 무역관련 신문인 Electronic News에 1971년 1월11일부터 기사를 연재하였는데, 그 기사의 제목을 "Silicon Valley USA"라고 하면서 처음 그 표현을 썼다. 
Valley refers to the Santa Clara Valley, located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, while Silicon refers to the high concentration of semiconductor and computer-related industries in the area.
Valley라 하는 것은 San Francisco Bay의 남쪽 끝에 위치한 Santa Clara Valley를 지칭하는 것이고, Silicon은 그 지역에 집중적으로 위치하고 있는 반도체 및 컴퓨터관련 기업체를 의미하는 단어이다.
These and similar technology firms slowly replaced the orchards which gave the area its initial nickname, the Valley of Heart's Delight.

이 지역은 본래 과수원이 밀집된 지역이여서 the Valley of Heart's Delight (기쁜 마음의 골짜기?)로 알려졌으나  위에서 말한 업체들과 또 이와 비슷한 종류의 과학기술관련 업체들이 들어서면서 점점 이 과수원들의 자리를 대신하게 된 것이다.
